Nude Self

The-Steppenwolf, 1969, oil on canvas, (34"x28")

It was a time of Carlos Castaneda, Tolkein, Herman Hesse and the Black Power Movement. It was flowers in your hair, beads around your neck, faded jeans and worn out cowboy boots; in Isla Vista it was radical priests, surfing, tripping in the sand dunes and watching them kill another Kennedy. Well, I guess the Texans won, at least until GE put their puppet RR in office and unleashed the dogs of capitalism.
This painting was about how we are forced into a corner and required to simply struggle with all our might to just maintain a falsely stable position soon to be dislodged.
The Steppenwolf seems like a whimper in time with strongly ominous prophetic capacity.
