Barcode/Fingerprint Project
Posted prior to opening of Evidence Art Show and is now its own website: www.EvidenceArtShow.com.
This was written before the show went up. So, this is history.
"You'll just see a dabbling of this project I'm currently working on. I hope to generate an entire show based on these concepts. I'm working with a single bar code element that was duplicated in thousands of labels I removed from the wrappers around the paper towels that I used in my classes in art and ceramics. I saved them for over twenty-five years out of thirty-seven years of teaching in public school high school.
After Proposition 13 was passed in California in 1975, local support for schools was cut and the maintenance department at our school could no longer afford to keep our paper towel dispensers full so the Art Department had to start using our funds to buy paper towels. Guess you could also say that students continued to demonstrate ever-increasing disrespect for institutionalism and displayed our culture's wasteful habits.
I plan to use these bar code labels to create a large image of my fingerprint indicating that this process (of my teaching art) may have resulted in leaving my "mark" (as in fingerprint) on the students I had over the years.
I'll keep adding some of my sketches and discoveries."
